Exciting Changes in the Mailing Industry
From our perspective at San Diego Postal and Shipping Equipment, there are many exciting things taking place in our industry, there are two that come to mind currently.
A few weeks ago we participated in the PIA Print Week trade show held at the San Diego Convention Center. Our booth created a lot of interest and excitement particularly from print shops and graphic designers, for two distinct reasons. The printers were interested in how they can incorporate mail services in to their product mix to improve service to their customers and to provide an additional profit center for their business. Many were surprised to learn that the cost of entry relative to the size of the opportunity is quite low and that the operating costs are not as prohibitive as they had imagined.
Graphic Designers were interested from a far different perspective. Their interest was in mail piece design and how to ensure that their ideas could be utilized yet still provide mail pieces that comply with USPS regulations. They were glad to hear that there are many resources available including the Mail Quality Control (MQC) certification offered by the San Diego Chapter of the MSMA. This USPS certification process provides the knowledge base to design compliant mail pieces for all types of mail. (See calendar of events.)
The second exciting change coming our way is the Shaped Based Pricing rate change that the USPS plans to implement in May of 2007. This change will challenge everyone in the industry to take advantage of the new rate system. The encouraging news for Hasler customers with commercial sized equipment is that they can take advantage of the modular construction of Hasler Mailing Systems and add a reasonably priced component that will automate the selection of mail type based on size, shape and weight. Many other systems on the market will require the owner to change out the entire mail system at significantly greater expense. If you have not yet spoken with one of our MQC certified Account Representatives regarding the upcoming changes, please call so we can educate you regarding compliance with the new requirements.
Next month we will bring you more information on these and other topics of interest.
